Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of designing a space for those of us with “roommates” is balancing the opinions of all parties involved.

When it came to the design of our own living room, my husband and I were on different design style spectrums, so selecting furniture and big ticket accessories was initially a challenge. I was on the neutral color palette train, with a strong preference to more earthy and bohemian aesthetics (though truthfully those aesthetics don’t fully mesh with the existing architecture of our home). My husband, Mark, was pushing for more color while preferring Mid Century Modern and Refined Rustic styles. What we landed on was a playful balance of colors & neutrals and clean lines of MCM pieces meshed with warm, organic materials - in the form of leather, wood and plants.

Below are some photos of our living room, which continues to evolve as we settle in to our home.

For both myself, and our pup, Andy, the chaise of our sectional is our absolute favorite spot in the house. We toyed with the idea of going with the smaller sofa option of the Article Sven’s collection, but ultimately choose the sectional with the chaise for maximum comfort.

Spacewise a sofa may have been a better selection and would have allowed for more flexibility in arranging furniture, but I was so set on having a place to put my feet up at the end of a long day! Our decision to go with the slightly larger furniture piece means that our space is much more comfortable for ourselves, and our guests - which in the end is one of the things we value most about our home.

Below I have shared links to the same (or similar) furniture and fixtures of our living room space, just incase anything in particular caught your eye.

The curtains are the main feature of our living room with their bold pattern and color. They draw the eyes into to one of the best features of our living room, all the glorious afternoon light! The rug ties in well to the curtains, while offering an interesting pattern but competing with the patterning of the curtains.

We installed the shelves in the corner of the living room ourselves, using solid walnut and raw steel brackets - both sourced from Etsy. These helped us bring in a warm natural look, and the brackets tied into some of the other details of the space, like the legs of our side tables.

Overall we love the eclectic and bright feel of our space, and we love most that it is our retreat at the end of a long day. It is also a great space for entertaining our dear family and friends - something that was important to us when we set out to purchase new furniture for this space. I would love to hear what you think of the space in the comments below!
