The world of sustainable furnishings is very complex. If you are looking for eco-friendly furnishings for your home, you might have noticed various certifications tacked on to products.

It can be overwhelming at first glance. Non-toxic? Organic? Sustainably Sourced? How do I know what’s right for me?

This post kicks off a series, where I will outline some of the most common certifications in the sustainable home furnishings industry. Before diving in, we need to address why these certifications are important:

Greenwashing

In Adryan Corcione’s article “What is Greenwashing?” it’s described as “…when a company or organization spends more time and money on marketing themselves as environmentally friendly than on minimizing their environmental impact. It is a deceitful advertising gimmick intended to mislead consumers who prefer to buy goods and services from environmentally conscious brands.”

As sustainable products become “popular,” consumers need to be able to identify what products actually are better for the environment as opposed to those falsely advertising as such.

The best way to do that is to have an understanding of the certifications products receive. So that’s what we’re going to do!

what we’ll review:

In the upcoming weeks, we will review the various certifications that allow companies to make sustainability claims such as:

  • Non-toxic

  • Sustainably Sourced

  • Organic

We’ll review what these certifications are, why they are important, and how to search for products that meet these standards.

After this series, I will be hosting a LIVE webinar all about sustainable furnishings! Be sure to subscribe below so you receive the latest posts & webinar deets!
